A stick becomes a magic wand. New games are invented with rules that change every five minutes. Solutions are tried to real challenges in real time. These moments may look different, but each gives kids something valuable: the chance to discover what they can do. At Swim&Gym Summer Camp, we believe summer should have room for both child-led play. Kids need time to follow their imaginations, along with opportunities to explore beyond their everyday routines.
Unstructured play is play that children shape themselves. Adults provide a safe setting and support, while kids decide what to do, how to do it, and where their ideas will take them. There doesn’t have to be a finished project or a winner. The fun comes from figuring things out along the way.
When children lead their own play, they get opportunities to practice:
- Creativity: What could we make with these materials?
- Problem-solving: Our tower keeps falling. What should we try?
- Cooperation: How can everyone have a part in the game?
- Decision-making: What do we want to do next?
- Speaking up: How can I explain my idea to my friends?
A little boredom can be a starting point. “I don’t know what to do” can be hard for adults to hear, especially when we want children to enjoy their day. But we don’t always need to fill that space immediately. Sometimes kids need a little time before an idea arrives. A few open-ended supplies, an inviting place to play, or an open ended question can help them get started. The goal is to give children room to discover their own interests, with adults nearby to offer encouragement when they need it.
Kids need time to explore AND time to choose. A full schedule can be exciting, but children also need breathing room. At Swim&Gym, our approach brings together movement, swimming, themed activities, field trips, and opportunities for choice and connection. We want campers to have experiences that spark their curiosity and room to make discoveries of their own. Sometimes the best question is simply: “What would you like to try?”
